News from Mt. Cuba

Mt. Cuba logo
Fall foliage

Though the tour season is just about over, Mt. Cuba Center is not closing down, just taking a winter break. We'll continue to offer classes, both onsite and online, that will keep your garden interests flowing when the cold season descends. Here's an article written by some of the Mt. Cuba Center staff with tips for preparing your garden for winter.

Coming up this week is Project Feeder Watch (Saturday, November 10, 10AM - 12 Noon, $15). Track our winter bird populations and learn how to identify common birds you might you might find on your feeders. All data collected will be sent to Cornell University's Lab of Ornithology. An information packet from Cornell is included in the registration fee.

In January, we welcome back Dr. Doug Tallamy, University of Delaware professor and author of Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens. While we know and understand the importance of using native plants in the landscape, many people don't realize the number of wildlife that are benefitting from these friendly sources of food and shelter. Discover Treasures Among Our Natives on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, 7-9PM. The cost is $20 and includes a dessert reception.

For any class, you may register at www.mtcubacenter.org, or by calling 302-239-4244. As always, I look forward to sharing the beauty of Mt. Cuba Center with you, onsite and online.

News from Mt. Cuba

With high-temperature records being broken all over the country, especially in the last few weeks, the thought of gardening seems a little daunting, doesn't it? But now is the time to give those carefully tended plants just a little extra attention. Make it a family affair and pass along the love of all things native to the next generation.

Family programming is highlighted in this month's classes at Mt. Cuba Center. The Journey from Caterpillar to Butterfly (Tuesdays, July 17 & 24) introduces kids to the magical metamorphosis of our winged friends. Jack Hubley's Wild Neighbors returns on Saturday, July 14 at 10AM. This time he's bringing hawks and owls - birds of prey that you may have seen in your own backyard. Keep unwanted plants out of your yard - learn Native Alternatives to Invasives on Wednesday, July 18, (10AM-12 Noon). Join me on Fridays, July 20 & August 3 and learn how to identify the most common Forest Trees of Delaware (10AM-12 Noon). Become a Mt. Cuba Center Researcher for a Day and contribute data to our trials on Heuchera and Coreopsis.(Saturday, July 21, 9AM - Noon.)

We've added a new selection to our online classes at Mt. Cuba Center Connect. Native Orchid Conference 2011 features seven hours of video lectures taken from last year's gathering of native orchid enthusiasts at Mt. Cuba Center. Watch them at your leisure - with the promo code "ladyslipper," the class is $35.

For details and registration for all our events, visit www.mtcubacenter.org, or call 302-239 4244. Remember, even when it's hot, the garden continues to give sanctuary to birds, bees and more. I look forward to sharing the beauty of our garden with you, onsite and online.

News from Mt. Cuba

Though the early spring has moved into early summer, there is still a lot to see in our gardens. Classes and tours, critters from your back door - all make an appearance in June at Mt. Cuba Center.
Critters come to visit on Saturday, June 16 (10AM-Noon) during Jack Hubley's Wild Neighbors ($20) show. See live mammals, birds of prey and snakes, most of which can be found in your backyard at one time or another. Jack Hubley has been a multi-media advocate for the natural world for more than 25 years. He hosts "Wild Moments" on WGAL-TV in Lancaster, PA.
Take a hike along a former bridle trail when you Walk the Natural Lands of Mt. Cuba Center on June 21(5:30-7:30PM, $10.) See some areas that only our native critters usually visit. Or take a close look at Native Plants for Native Pollinators and observe some of our best native plants for attracting native pollinators. It's Saturday, June 30, from 10AM to 12:30 PM and the $35 fee includes lunch and an insect-attracting plant.
Our Summer Twilight Tours offer a different light on the gardens. The sun in the western sky softens the view of our ponds and babbling brook. Relax and refresh as you enjoy the lilies, azaleas and coneflowers. Sign up for Wednesday or Thursday evenings at 5:30. Tours are just $5.
For more information on critters and classes, visit www.mtcubacenter.org or call 302-239-4244. As always, whether it's onsite or online, I look forward to sharing the beauty of Mt. Cuba Center with you.

News from Mt. Cuba

A Maryland scientist recently described the change from winter to spring as "if the entire landscape goes from exhaling to inhaling." If you've spent any time outside lately, you know that spring has arrived simply by inhaling the scents around you.
Two classes coming up in April really mark the entrance of spring. "How Our Gardens Change" is a three-part lecture and garden walk series that give students a chance to experience seasonal changes in our Woods Path and Sunny Border gardens. The series starts on Friday, April 20 (10AM-12 Noon) and costs $20 per session. Trilliums of Mt. Cuba Center (Wednesday, April 25, 10 AM - 12 Noon, $20) showcases our extraordinary collection of these most iconic spring ephemeral plants. Gregg Tepper, Director of Horticulture, will be teaching both classes. To register, visit www.mtcubacenter.org, or call 302-239-4244.
I'm very excited to announce the release of the latest offering on Mt. Cuba Center Connect, our distance learning program. "The Meadow Plants of Mt. Cuba Center" is our first e-book, and is authored by Dave Korbonits, meadow horticulturist at Mt. Cuba Center. Find out how to install and maintain a meadow, then review Dave's insights on eight notable native grasses for the meadow and 35 wildflowers. The full price of the e-book is $25. However, use the promo code "grasses" during the purchase process, and you'll pay the discount price of just $20.
Finally, mark your calendar for our not-to-be-missed Annual Wildflower Celebration. Sunday, April 29, 10AM-4PM is the date and time. It's our yearly celebration of spring and this year should be really interesting. We're finding plant combinations never seen before due to the unusual weather patterns.
As always, and especially during this unusual spring of 2012, I look forward to sharing the beauty of Mt. Cuba Center with you, both onsite and online.
Sincerely,
Eileen Boyle

SPADE AND TROWEL CLUB CATCHES A WAVE FOR

Hawaii: Islands of Aloha, theme of the 2012 Philadelphia International Flower Show, inspires the creativity and imagination of local garden club members putting finishing touches on their upscale Store Window, a Competitive Class exhibit.
A switch for these ladies (and gents) who usually choose an exhibit demonstrating their landscape design expertise, Spade and Trowel Club’s display which they titled “Here’s Looking at You” features window dressing for an eyewear and accessories boutique and requires decorative use of fresh flowers to tell the story. The class, “Ala Moana Boulevard,” will be judged on Saturday March 3 and again on Wednesday March 7.

Co-chairs Sharon Small, Margaret Hennes and Jane Owen, all of Kennett Square, and their energetic committee have been meeting since May of 2011 to develop the plan for this exhibit. Other contributors are Alice Bucher, Tala Graham, Sandy Yeatman, Jackie Blake, Ann Bryce, Caryn Hetherston, Edythe Joines, Gerrie Lunger, Nancy Olson, Kurt Wolter, Suzanne Pusey, Kris Qualls, Jon Olson and Rod Ellingsworth.

Jane Owen and Tala Graham of Kennett Square ‘s Spade and Trowel Club
admire Tillandsia (air plants) and Orchids at Waldor Orchids in Linwood NJ.

The Flower Show opens March 3 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia for members of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, and March 4-11 for the general public. Go to www.theflowershow.com for more information.  The new FlowerShow app for smartphones, available on or about February 20, provides maps, calendar of events and schedules of performances, lectures and demonstrations, lists of exhibitors and vendors and much more.

Mt. Cuba News

Dear gardening friends -
I'm inviting you to get connected online at Mt. Cuba Center Connect! Today marks the release of our third distance learning class, "Moss Gardening." I'm so excited about this new addition to our program that I'm offering the friends of Mt. Cuba Center a discount on the price of the class. Instead of $25, use the promotion code "bluets" when purchasing the class, and you'll pay just $20.
In the class, you'll find videos featuring two of our most moss-savvy gardeners, Renee Kemmerer and Marcie Weigelt. Renee will show you how to select and prepare your site for growing, how to encourage moss that may already be there, and how to transplant from another site. Marcie wields her flat-blade knife and demonstrates the process of removing moss in preparation for transplanting, as well as how to keep your moss bed clean - a "very Zen-like" experience, according to Marcie! Our guest instructor is Dr. Alice Waegel, who shares her knowledge of the biology of mosses.
This is the one class that I know will always fill up quickly when we offer it onsite at our wonderful moss bank. With the online class, there's unlimited enrollment and you can enjoy it any time you like. Go to www.mtcubacenter.org and click on the Distance Learning button to get started. And whether I see you onsite or online, I look forward to sharing the beauty of Mt. Cuba Center with you.
